Kicking off 2021

  • by

Happy New Year everyone! 2020 felt like a bit of a gap year in many ways, but it’s finally over. Now we can all look forward to a calm and collected return to normalcy in 2021. We made it! So let’s get this year’s blog started! Did you know that this year’s color is Aegean Teal 2136-40?

EDIT: Ok, full disclosure, I wrote that intro at the end of last year and I after watching the news...I might have been a bit too optimistic. No worries though! There's always 2022.

New Year, New Profile Pic

So to start off the new year I decided to update my personal profile/artist pics. Now, I’m not a photographer, and I also don’t have the money to hire one, so I needed to find a way to get an interesting and high quality image that fit the music I’m planning on releasing over the next few months. So I turned to Deep Dream Generator to get creating.

If you’ve never used the software before, the terminology and controls can be a bit confusing. But the whole site functions as a mini-social network that allows you to see and copy the settings other users have used to create beautiful pieces. So you can mimic others’ work to get some really great results early on. Which is exactly what I did.

After messing around with the controls a bit I decided to choose some background images I thought would match up well with the Deep Dream algorithm, popped a hastily taken selfie on top of that and badly photoshopped it all together. Here’s what the photo look liked pre-deep dream:

I know, the background makes no sense when you know what it is.

And after running it through the algorithm with some killer settings here is the result:

New Profile Pic
Way more mysterious this way, right?

Absolutely stunning. I was so happy with it that I didn’t even bother trying other settings! My new 2021 profile pic was finished.

…ok, that’s a lie. I tried one other version and didn’t like it at all. I think it’s the eyes? I’ll let you be the judge:

I like the colors in this one a lot though

NEW MUSIC: “Olm”

Fate decided to bless me with ANOTHER early January release date this year, all thanks to the people at Tunecore Japan. They ran a campaign last month called #independantAF to help out all us independent musician types. A free 1-Year streaming offer at no cost to me, where I could upload one song to all their partnered services and get 100% of the profits. So literally free distribution. I love them so much. And I wasn’t about to pass that offer up!

I had been working on the song “Olm” on my live composition streams for several weeks over on Twitch, and the timing lined up perfectly. What started out as a new instrument demo track quickly became the slow, burning anthem you hear below.

More info about the release is available on the album page over on my NEW WEB SHOP! Wait what!?!

NEW SHOP!!

That’s right! I’ve finally put together my own shop! I’ve actually been working on this for the past couple months, trying to get everything put together correctly, and it’s finally here! Now you can buy my music directly from me! What’s that? You like to stream your music? No problem! Because I plan on releasing a lot more than just music on here. I’m talkin’ T-Shirts, I’m talkin’ mugs, I’m talkin’ sheet music, I’m talkin’ posters, you get the picture.

Of course, none of that is available yet, but now when I release something new I’ll be able to put it up right away! So keep an eye out for fun offers moving forward. And if you DO like owning the music yourself you can get those now! Also, I’ll be adding all of my band’s merch for international/English orders. I’ll update you when that’s finished.

February SERIES

I also wanted to open up a discussion on my blog plans for February here. I’m planning on doing a series of posts about music in a more formal and analytical format next month, but I want to know what you think I should focus on first. I’ve had a couple ideas, and I’ll share them here just to give you an idea of the direction I want to take this:

・The playing evolution of a famous drummer over time.
・The history of a specific music genre with standout artist examples.
・Breaking down the arrangement of a popular band’s music.

So I’ve already brainstormed ideas for the above themes, but if you have another theme in the same vein, OR if you have a specific artist/genre/band that fits in the above themes, I’d love to hear it! Let me know in the comments below, or you can DM me on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! Can’t wait to hear your ideas.

Well that’s all for this first blog of the year. All joking aside I hope you had a wonderful start to your 2021. Things seem absolutely CRAZY right now, but as long as we stick together we’ll get through this. I’m going to be doing my best to bring joy to the world this year through creativity and music, and I hope it’s bringing you some happiness already. Until next time, stay safe, stay healthy,

Stay creative, EB
