Back in the stay-home

Covid numbers have been way up this week so Sapporo is back in emergency stay-home mode. With only about 1.5% of the population vaccinated this fourth wave is hitting harder than before. I’ve been trying to stay home as much as possible, only really going out to grocery shop and teach the odd lesson, but it definitely feels like people are starting to get restless. Well, I think this sums up the “stay-home” dynamic in town better than I can…

It’s a bit hard to make out, but that’s a community baseball field on the riverbank near my house. The cop on the road above them is using his car’s megaphone to tell the people playing baseball below to go home and stay inside.

So, yeah. I don’t think we’re getting back to normal anytime soon over here. And sadly, that means:

Show Cancellation 🙁

So I know I just announced the sleepy.ab show last week, but due to the state of emergency in Okayama Prefecture the organizer has decided to cancel the event. I’ve actually heard rumors of it being rescheduled for later this year? Maybe. I’ll let you know when I find out.

Read the official announcement here.

Weekly Update

But that’s enough of the negative, I actually had a GREAT week getting lots of work done. Let’s see where everything is.

Next Single +4%

The mix is finished and it sounds really good. I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different mixing methods since NEON, which I think turned out OK. Not amazing, but for an early attempt not horrible. Mixing isn’t something I’ve ever really studied and the learning curve is rough. But I think I had a bit of a breakthrough with this project, and I’m excited to see how the next album sounds because of it.

So that puts the progress bar at 56%. Not a big change because there are still a few important steps before it’s ready for release. The plan this week is to finish mastering! And I’m thinking maybe name announcement next week?

Next Album +7%

Last week I wrapped pre-production taking the bar up to 10%! Production starts this week, and with the notes I’ve got laid out, it should be quick. Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly. I might be posting samples while I work this week, so keep your eyes on Instagram.

Norainu Sheet Music +25%

After a week of trying to figure out composing software I’m happy to say that everything is transcribed and beautiful! Well, not beautiful, that’s this week. But it’s easy to read and play! So the bar moves to 50%. This week is about beautifying and polish. If you have a favorite font for section headers please let me know in the comments.

Did I ever tell you that I’m a published lyricist? Ok, backing up a bit. This past week I spent some time sorting through old photos and I found a LOT of fun things that I don’t think I ever really posted about. I thought I’d tell you about a project I worked on back in 2016.

I was contacted by my friend makou, an incredible composer and musician, to create lyrics for a song he was writing. He wouldn’t tell me what project it was for, but he sent me the rough audio and a few thematic ideas. We ended up with “Lift You Up” , a song full of uplifting imagery and a message of hope/friendship. You get it. Then I got invited to head into the studio at Keisen University with makou and local vocalist ASUKA to help out with the recording.

What I found out MUCH later is that the song was actually written for a music game series called DJMAX, and is featured in the RESPECT release of the game. So not only did I get a lyricist credit, but also another game title under my belt! Never played this one though… Let me know if you have! I think they just ported it to PS4?

Oh, and here’s the song:

That’s all for this week, I’ve got some music to write.
