Save for Later #1

Well, we’re halfway through November already! How are you all holding up? From presidential election shenanigans to new waves of covid popping up all over the world, there’s a lot of real-world stress to be had. But I’ve been staying sane by getting some deep work done on projects here at home in the office. Things are going pretty well and I think I’ll even be able to reveal some stuff in next week’s blog! This week, however, I thought I’d take a dive into that special folder I’ve got on my phone called “random” and share five cool photos either taken here in Sapporo or found somewhere online. So strap in for the very first entry in my new monthly series: Save for Later

1. WiNnIe tHe pOoH

Goggly eyes on the pooh-bear

This guy sits just outside the door of a student’s apartment building. Greeting me every week with eyes that make me question if it’s actually honey he’s got in that jar there…

2. Synth Beer

Synthesizer design on a beer

Found this delicious craft beer last month while out at a craft fair. It’s made by Culmination Brewing Co. (we get a surprising amount of imported craft beer here). It had a delicious dark lager flavor with a bit of a bite. I do recommend it but be sure to check out the other brews on the website, if nothing else their label game is on point. Definitely a name to save for later.

3. Old School Delivery

Death Stranding style delivery man

I think I found this one on reddit. I don’t have a lot of info on it, and my half-assed researching (I popped it into google image search and then immediately gave up) didn’t return anything. But it’s definitely a delivery man working in a mountainous region using an awesome old school carrier. It reminded me a lot of the game Death Stranding, and I wasn’t even aware that people actually carried things this way until I saw the pic.
Death Stranding’s soundtrack is dope btw. Great music to read to:

4. Old School Video Shop

Very old style video shop

Here’s something that shouldn’t exist anymore and yet somehow does. A VHS rental shop. I see it every day on my way home from work, and am amazed that they haven’t gone out of business yet. The name “VIDEO IN WORLD” is at once the most literal description of the business possible and yet also a profound statements of defiance. Yes, VHS videos ARE still in world, and they will be in world long after all of us are not.

I’ve never been inside though…these places are usually at least 2/3rds porn.

5. Moomin Exhibit

Moomin exhibit ticket

I went to the Moomin exhibit here in Sapporo a couple weeks ago, to learn about the history and influence of this incredibly popular character from Finland. I didn’t know anything about Moomin until coming to Japan 10 years ago, and even then I was never really taken with the depictions I’d seen. But this exhibit had over 300 original sketches by illustrator and writer Tove Jansson, and the detail and skill in each of them really blew me away. So I definitely recommend looking this one up if you’ve not heard of it before. There’s also a new animated series that looks super cute.

That’s all for this week! If you like the “Save for Later” series, let me know in the comments. I’ll be back next week with (hopefully) some updates on a couple projects.

Stay creative – E
